An Introduction to Our Common Reading
Dear Students,
As part of your introduction to university life, we are pleased to introduce to you the book that has been chosen by our campus community as the 2009-10 First Year Student Common Reading, Three Cups of Tea. One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Relin. Every first-year student will be reading this book in preparation for arrival on campus and the beginning of Fall semester.
Just as UNC is well known for transforming the lives of our students and community, so this book is the story of the transformative power of education, as expressed in the work of Greg Mortenson, an ordinary person who by happenstance after a mountain-climbing mishap found himself in a Pakistani village and began building a series of life-changing relationships and forging a path to peace through education.
Many of your first-year instructors will be incorporating this book into their classes, and a series of activities around themes in the book will take place during the academic year. Additionally, the High Plains Library District has adopted Three Cups of Tea as its “Community Read,” and we anticipate several opportunities for partnerships with the greater Greeley/Weld County community during the course of the year.
Please accept our most sincere welcome and congratulations on joining our incomparable community of teaching and learning.
Sincerely,
Thomas A. Smith, Ph.D.
