Battery Recall for select Gateway - Sony batteries

Gateway has identified that certain lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony Energy Devices Corp. can potentially overheat under rare circumstances.

While Gateway has not identified any failures of this type in Gateway systems using these batteries, the company is cooperating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Sony to act in the interest of customer safety by initiating a voluntary recall of all affected batteries.

Gateway notebook PCs with these batteries began shipping in September 2005. They were primarily sold through Gateway’s Direct and Professional channels and to a lesser degree in retail. Gateway is offering free replacement batteries for customers who purchased notebooks with affected batteries.

IBM Recalls 225,000 Laptop Power Cords

POSTED: 5:46 pm EDT September 2, 2004

IBM and the company that makes power adapters for its laptop computers recalled Thursday 225,000 of the cords.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that adapters, made by Delta Electronics of Taipei, Taiwan, can overheat, damage the circuit board and melt through the housing. That can cause shocks or fires.

Six incidents have been reported to IBM, with some minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

The 56W AC power adapters were shipped primarily with IBM ThinkPad i Series, 390 and 240 Series, and s Series notebook computers.

They have have three hollow pins at the AC inlet and part number 02K6549 on a label on the top of the unit. The IBM logo appears on top of the unit. Adapters with solid pins are not included in this recall.

Electronics stores, IBM's Web site and other retailers sold the adapters with ThinkPad computers from January 1999 through August 2000. They were also sold separately for about $55.

The CPSC said consumers should unplug the recalled adapters from the wall outlet immediately and contact IBM for a free replacement unit.

Call IBM at (800) 410-5629 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday, or visit AdapterProgram.com, to get a replacement.
