Q: When will BearDrive be available to students?
A: BearDrive is now available to all UNC students and faculty.
Q: Can BearDrive be accessed off campus?
A: Yes, BearDrive can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection.
Q: Can files and folders be shared with non-UNC colleagues?
A: Yes, non-UNC colleagues can access any folders or files for which you provide access.
Q: Is BearDrive reliable?
A: BearDrive is based on very reliable and strenuously tested file sharing and storage software called Digital Locker developed specifically for educational institutions by Xythos, a leader in collaboration software. Xythos collaboration software is used by hundreds of colleges and universities around the world including Boston College, Harvard, Yale, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Colorado, to name a few.
Q: What are the limitations and known issues in BearDrive?
A: Database files can be saved in BearDrive, but they cannot be opened using the URL link.
Q: How will BearDrive training be conducted?
A: Instructions for using BearDrive have been developed by UNC’s Technical Support Center and are available on Technical Support's SupportU Web site. CETL will offer BearDrive training for faculty and staff. BearDrive will be supported by the TSC if you have problems with or questions about BearDrive.
Q: Is BearDrive integrated with Ursa?
A: BearDrive is not integrated with Ursa at this time.
Q: Is BearDrive integrated with Blackboard?
A: Yes, BearDrive is integrated with Blackboard using the FileBridge Extension.
Q: What happens to my files on BearDrive when I’m no longer associated with UNC?
A: Files will be deleted from student BearDrive accounts 90 days after their last day as an enrolled student. Students are responsible for removing their data from BearDrive within the 90-day period.
Q: Can my files be restored if they are accidentally deleted from my BearDrive?
A: The BearDrive server is backed up for disaster recovery purposes only. Once a file is deleted from your BearDrive it will be moved into a Trash folder. Once the file is deleted from the Trash folder it is permanently deleted.
Q: Do I have to pay a monthly fee to use BearDrive?
A: No, the BearDrive is funded by the Student Technology Fee and there is no monthly charge to use the service.
