Angela Henderson (Ph.D. Sociology) taught Communications 101. She helped me transition from the small college I attended in Iowa to UNC. She helped me figure out where to go, what to do, and was there for me if I needed extra help. She is just great.”
I’m an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the College of Humanities and Science. I teach Intro to Sociology and Classical Sociological Theory and have taught Sociology of Aging and Family Studies.
I started out as a journalism major in college, but took a class in Sociology of the City, where I lived in inner city Chicago for a month, immersed in clean-up projects, non profit projects like working at the food bank homeless shelters. After that experience, I just couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
I came here from Texas Tech University about a year and a half ago, and I love UNC. The students here are really committed to their education. Not only do they work hard at school, many of them also work full time. I really appreciate their work ethic. It blows my mind, in a good way.
My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the light go on in a student’s brain. When they "get it.” It happens a lot. I’m able to spark some interest, and then get to see how their view of life begins to change. I like to push my students, and to see their progression. It’s rewarding to watch students improve over a semester.
