ChrisI chose UNC because I didn’t feel at home at any other school in Colorado. From the first time I visited UNC, I felt the closeness here. I went to a high school with 7,000 students and I didn’t want to go to another monster school.

I started out majoring in business administration with a marketing emphasis, but I discovered I’m not really that creative. I wasn’t good at coming up with advertising ideas. Then I discovered Sociology. Studying about how people interact is intriguing to me. When you’re sitting in a board room, you have to understand that where people are coming from is more important than where they are going.

I don’t feel like I’m in class when I am studying anything about sociology. It’s a passion. When you find what you like, it’s fun.

I’ve been involved in a lot of clubs since my freshman year. It’s easy to get involved and connected. I was on student council, the Diversity Council, involved with the Black Student Alliance, the Marketing Club….most of my involvement has come through student government.

I’ve been able to get my own sense of belonging here. I understand where I fit in, in the grand scheme of things. I’ve learned what my strengths and weaknesses are. I’ve learned how important a sense of community is. I realize how important people are in an organization.

I hope to go to law school—ideally, some place warm! I hope to go into corporate litigation and work on behalf of a company in mergers and acquisitions.

So many faculty members have made a big impact on me at UNC. Angie Henderson (Assistant Professor, Sociology) always challenged me and others to never see a problem without finding a solution to the problem. This is critical to our development as people, and as citizens of the world. My mathematics professor Chad Eshelman always finds humor in everything. He taught me you can go through a difficult situation easier with humor. He emphasizes real life experience, not just theories, so you can apply what you learn here in real life. And Dr. Vish Iyer, my marketing professor, taught me that you’re not marketing a product to a group of people, you’re offering services to people who have every day lives, there’s a soul in the customer.

This is a place where you can walk in one way, and UNC will help facilitate your direction. I walked in as an extremely shy person. UNC helped me get out of my bubble. There were programs from Day 1 that got me involved. I learned how to network and interact. I am extremely grateful to UNC for that.
