I visited a lot of campuses around the country and the one where the people treated me like they really wanted to help me, was UNC.

I studied at the Centro de Lenuas Modernas at the Universidad de Granada last fall in Spain, through the Cultural Experiences Abroad program. But the International Education Office at UNC was very involved and helpful while I was trying to figure things out. Then I traveled with friends for 12 days before I had to be in Cork, Ireland, where I studied at University College Cork until June.  I’ll be a senior next year at UNC.

I chose UNC because I thought I was going to major in Athletic Training, and UNC’s program is a good one.  But I’m now majoring in Earth Sciences with an emphasis in Environmental Earth Sciences and a minor in Spanish.  I think someday I’ll be a teacher, but for now I’m more interested in the Environmental side.  I do plan on going to grad school.

The first class I had in college was Global Systems: A History of American Environmental Worldviews with Dr. Richard Jurin. He and that class directly influenced the eventual shift to my major now.

There have been a lot of people that have contributed to my success and happiness at UNC.  I’ve had some really great professors, my advisors are top notch, and the International Education Office and the Honors staff are always there to answer questions and/or give advice.

Dr. William Hoyt is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had.  I met him when I took his Oceanography course and now he is my advisor.  He is a big proponent of me studying abroad.  I can tell he really believes in me and wants to see me succeed.
