I grew up in Greeley and I chose to attend UNC because it was the most affordable school that offered an Economics program. When I came to check out the school, I felt that the teachers really cared about the students and I thought the dorms on Central Campus looked really beautiful. I have always lived on campus either in a dorm or in the University Apartments, but it’s also nice being able to visit my family whenever I want.
Growing up my parents took us traveling and they encouraged us to experience new cultures. Right now I'm following that interest by being involved with the UNC International Ambassadors Program and studying abroad. Life in Spain this past semester has been absolutely amazing. It's a completely different lifestyle. Plus, the program built in time to take additional excursions, so I've been able to visit Rome, Paris, Barcelona and several cities in Spain and the beach. I got to ride a camel and sleep in the desert in Morocco and see Stonehenge and Windsor Castle in England.
I’ll be studying Chinese and traveling the Silk Road in China for the summer. Eventually, I want to either join the Peace Corps or continue studying Chinese. My final goal is to work for the UN or possibly the US State Department.
I've been involved in a lot of different groups on campus. I've been a member of the Honors Program, which I would recommend for anyone. They offer a lot of amazing opportunities for students who want to go beyond their regular program. Kaye Holman is one of the main people in the Honors Program. She has helped, not only me, but every student she meets in discovering their interests and helping them to set goals.
I’ve also helped out with Relay for Life, Foreign Language Day and the Asian New Year Festival. As a Sophomore UNC Journey Leader I helped freshmen move in and this past fall I was the captain of an Intramural Volleyball team.
My favorite thing about my UNC experience is the people I've met. I have met a lot of amazing students and teachers. I have especially enjoyed meeting students from other countries like China and Taiwan.
