I’m from Thornton, Colorado and I chose UNC because I could get a good education and continue to compete in Judo and Wrestling. I’ve developed a close relationship with my wrestling coach and he’s been really understanding, allowing me to train and travel for my Judo competitions.
In 2008, I was ranked number two going into the Olympic trials for Judo. Unfortunately, I had to have surgery and didn’t make it to the trials. It was a rough time, but the coaches, athletic training staff and my wrestling team members really supported me and helped me come back. I was able to wrestle for UNC this year, thanks to the great people that I work with every day. They’re concerned about my best interest, not just results. There’s a family atmosphere among the athletes and coaches here.
My Geography professors have been awesome. It’s been hard to balance all my traveling, wrestling and my class work. I’m really grateful to both Dr. Doerner and Dr. Klein for helping me stay on track with my studies. I’m thinking about teaching when I graduate, but I also want to stay involved with Judo, so I’m keeping my options open.
I don’t have much free time, but when I do, I try to stay busy golfing, swimming and reading. I’m a Harry Potter fan, for sure. I also love going to Rockies games and watching the Nuggets and Broncos. I’m definitely a hometown boy when it comes to sports.
My favorite thing about UNC has been being part of the wrestling team. I’ve formed strong relationships and learned a lot about myself. I’m definitely a stronger person, both physically and mentally.
