BA, Public Relations/Journalism and Mass Communications, 1997

As a UNC alumnus, I am most proud about the breadth of opportunities the University provided me.  Taking advantage of those opportunities was instrumental in my professional and personal growth, and has everything to do with the successes and meaning I have achieved professionally and personally.  I am also proud to have received the Future Black Leader and Achiever Award, which was an award given by the Marcus Garvey Cultural Center, and the Journalism and Mass Communications Departmental Scholar Award.

My favorite memories of UNC involve the accomplishments of my historically black, social service fraternity, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.  We were a group of highly civic-minded, positive and outgoing young men who were involved in the University Program Council, Residence Life, UNC sports and the acting and dance programs. We developed and participated in many community service projects, and did our best to leave our positive mark on the University.  I also served on the University Program Council as the Comedy Showcase Chairperson and worked as a rover for the UNC Police Department and was editor of The Black Star Line, a publication associated with the Marcus Garvey Cultural Center.

All of these activities helped develop my leadership skills and instill in me the importance of civic service and social responsibility.  I’ve gone on to earn my law degree from the University of Arizona College of Law and have learned the delicate act of balancing work, play, and community.  I’m a husband and father of two, and a partner in a large and busy Denver-based law firm.  I also volunteer my time for community organizations including the Urban League of the Pikes Peak Region, Inc., the NITA Miranda Trial Advocacy Institute and the ELD/Multi-Cultural Youth Leadership Initiative. As a black professional, I believe it is imperative to contribute my time and effort to minority communities so that I might serve as a tangible role model for minority youth, possibly inspiring them to strive for educational and career opportunities they may not have otherwise considered.

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart, April, for 10 years. April is also a UNC alumnus of the class of 1999. We have two kids; daughter Kylee age seven, and son Devin age five.  I enjoy traveling with my family, playing golf, public speaking and giving back to my community.
