I grew up in different parts of Western Colorado and now my family lives in Craig, Colorado. UNC was the only school I was interested in. I came here for Dance Camp one summer and to visit friends and I fell in love with the campus. I became interested in Speech and found out that UNC’s program is the best in the state. So I was sold!
My professors in the Speech Department are so smart and know the field so well that they can give us tons of practical examples. All my professors know me by name and that was one of my big goals when I came to UNC. I wanted to have relationships with my professors. I’ve learned so much from Dr. Fahey. Her classes have been really challenging. Professor Julie Hanks has helped me a lot and inspired me to continue with Speech.
I also love being part of the Center for Honors, Scholars and Leadership. I’m a work-study student in the office and have been able to plan Embracing Community and the Earth Day Celebration two years in a row. I also do a lot of behind-the-scenes work for the President’s Leadership Program. Kaye Holman and Catie Holden have been amazing for me, they’ve gotten me through a lot of challenges.
I just have a lot of pride in UNC. I’m so happy to be a student here. I think I’m getting an excellent education and it’s just great to be around people who genuinely care about learning and giving back to their community. The students in the honors program are incredible, I truly see them as the leaders of the future. They care about something bigger than themselves. When I go out into the world I will have access to an incredible network of really smart, really driven people.
I’d like to try a few different things within the field of speech language pathology or audiology. I might like to work in a medical setting (Children’s Hospital would be amazing!), work for the school system or start my own private practice or non-profit. I’m excited about all the possibilities.
I love getting involved and knowing what’s going on all over campus. UNC has a lot of great programming and I know I can’t participate in all of it, but I try to do as much as I can. I’ve broadened my leadership skills though student government, Center for Honors, Scholars and Leadership and I’ve been passionate about giving back to the community. Every year we do a Spring Break Service Trip and last year I went to Moab, Utah, helping them with water conservation and solving some erosion problems in wilderness areas. That was an amazing trip and I encourage anyone to try a Spring Break Service Trip.
For fun, I love to knit and dance. My roommates make fun of me because I’m always dancing around the house. I just love being around people. I miss my family and it’s hard to miss out on family time, but they support me and know that I want to make the most out of my education.
