The Association for Women in Communications
(AWC) was founded as Theta Sigma Phi on April 8, 1909 by seven female
journalism students at the University of Washington in Seattle. Today, the
Association consists of over 60 student chapters across the country in 43
states and 7,500 professional communicators in 70 chapters across the nation
and around the world.
This web of over 130 professional and student chapters links all members-

professional development opportunities.
All UNC students interested in the communications field are encouraged to join.
The national organization has members specializing in Graphic Design, Print and

Communication and Educational Law, Magazine and Book Publishing, Technical
Communications, and Electronic Communications.
The UNC chapter of AWC was established during the Fall Semester of 1998 and has
grown in size and scope since then. The program includes enriching
opportunities for students.
Guest speakers have enlighten the group on topics such as: Advertising Sales,
Media Buying, Crisis Communication, Career Development, and other topics of
interest.
Each Spring the Denver chapter sponsors a shadow day with our members, where
students and professionals are matched up and spend a day together.
AWC has traveled to various media centers across the state. Outings have
included trips to The
National Digital Television Center, K-99
, Tri102 Radio Studios,
and The Greeley Tribune.
In October of 1999, students went to Chicago and visited various media in that
market. The trip included viewing a taping of a major syndicated television
program, touring the Chicago Tribune,
visiting with public relations professionals at the Federal Reserve bank,
touring Edelman Public Relations Firm,
and visiting the Museum of Broadcast
Communications.
In the Spring Semester of 2000, chapter members toured
Channel 9 in Denver. Students watched the production of the noon news
show and visited with Gary Shapiro after the show. Following lunch at Cafe
Odyssey, the group met with the public relations staff at Coors in Golden.
After a brief visit to the Coor's hospitality center, it was back to Greeley.
