UNC FYE 108 Course EvaluationsWe also wanted to evaluate UNC FYE students’ satisfaction with the course and with their instructor. We selected questions that we thought were most important, such as questions regarding instructor approachability and knowledge, and questions regarding adequacy of course assignments, use of class time, and timeliness of feedback. We also asked students to provide written feedback regarding instructor strengths and weaknesses and the course assignments that were most and least useful. The course-instructor feedback form can be downloaded here. We found that students rates instructors most highly on questions of approachability. Students felt they could approach instructors to talk about classroom issues, issues related to being a first-year student. The students reported stronger agreement that their instructor was available to them outside of class, treated students with respect, and showed genuine interest in students in their class. Students also more highly agreed that their instructor encouraged students to participate in class. The results across all of UNC's FYE sections can be downloaded here. Finally, students provided consistent written feedback that the most valuable assignments were creating a four-year plan of courses to take during their undergraduate career, participating in campus activities, and learning more about the resources available to them on campus. Students provided helpful feedback that we will use to modify the course to better serve future cohorts of first-year students. When asked whether they would recommend UNCs FYE course to the next cohort of students, this is what some students had to say: “Yes, it gets you started and gives you the opportunity to get involved and get out there when you’re afraid and new.” “Yes, it will help them meet friends and help them get through their first year.” “Yes it provides a family to get through the first semester.” “Yes because it helps give a sense of belonging to the school.” “Yes because you have a chance to bond with other students and it helps you figure things out first semester.” “Yes, it will prepare them for college life.” “For sure, without a doubt because it really helps with getting involved, feeling comfortable on campus, and knowing where to start to get organized to be able to graduate in 4 years.” “Yes, it is a good first year class because it helped us get used to college and help us lead the way.” “Yes, this class holds valuable information that freshmen don’t necessarily know.” “Yes, because it gives you a chance to meet and make friends, and feel connected to UNC.” (Student’s emphasis) “Yes because it prepares for the classes and helps you get comfortable with the campus and college.” “Yes, because it really helps freshman get started and really helps when you struggle.” “Yes, because it is a good way to set up a group of study mates of friends.” “Yes because it kept me updated about my major and events or deadlines coming up.” “Yes, I met a lot of friends through this class.” “Yes, it makes the transition smoother and less scary.” “I would recommend this class to first year students to help get them acquainted and involved on campus.” “I would recommend this class to incoming freshman because it helped me meet friends and it helped me with school.” “Yes, the four year plan is useful and it gives you a group of students to relate to and talk with outside of class.” |
