Student Success Modules

Student Success Modules are supplemental classroom topics and presentations offered by UNC faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as local agencies. These modules have been chosen for inclusion as important topics that first year students face as they make the transition to college. Please contact speakers directly to schedule a module for your section of UNC FYE 108. This page will be updated regularly, so check back often to see the new additions!

Sexual Assault Prevention/Awareness

The Assault Survivors Advocacy Program (ASAP) wants to educate students about issues related to Sexual Assault such as Consent, The Role of Alcohol in Sexual Assault, Effects of Sexual Assault, How You Can Help a Friend, and ASAP Services.  The Peer Advocates of ASAP are trained to speak to groups of students about this issue through lecture and interactive activities.  For more information about the program, go to the website: www.unco.edu/asap

Student Rights and Responsibilities

UNC students have the right to a safe and respectful campus environment, inside and outside the classroom.  Students also have responsibilities to act in accordance with certain standards of conduct so as to not interfere with the rights of others or put anyone in harm's way.  The Dean of Students Office Rights and Responsibilities presentation reviews UNC's Honor Code and the Student Handbook which are in place to uphold academic and non-academic standards.  The presentation includes interactive case studies that allow FYE students to read real situations that could take place on or off-campus and reflect on what type of consequences the students involved may face.

“Discover Your Strengths”

For this presentation, students need to complete an inventory called “Strengthsquest.”  The inventory can either be taken at UNC Career Services, or at Strengthquest.com, for a $15 fee.  Students need to allow approximately 30 minutes to complete the inventory.  Results will list the top five strengths of the student.  The Class presentation will assist students to learn more about their top five strengths, as well as learn about the strengths of others, in an incredibly active format.  Students then have unlimited access to the Strengthsquest website, which offers information about how to apply strengths to academics, class registration, career choice, leadership development and positive relationships.

Understanding UNC’s Liberal Arts Core

The mission of the Liberal Arts curriculum is to provide students with a well rounded education.  With that said, it is not always easy to understand the Liberal Arts Core graduation requirements.  Academic Advising can assist in explaining these ever-changing requirements.

Building a Graduation Plan or 4-year Plan

Giving students a sense of direction from the onset of their education is critical.  Equipping students with the tools to build a 4 year plan is a means to provide each student with direction needed.  Academic advising can assist with instructions for building an individualized 4 year plan.

How to Maximize the Major Fair Experience

The Major Fair is absolutely the premier event that each undeclared and pre major should attend.  This is an annual event where each major has representation at the fair to offer 4 year plans, entrance requirements, and additional perspective that will aid students in their decision to declare.   This is a one-stop shop that proves to be most beneficial for students.
