Ron Brooks is instructor of trumpet at the University of Northern Colorado where he teaches applied trumpet, and assists with orchestral excerpts, trumpet ensemble, and the weekly trumpet seminar.
For more than 20 years, he performed as Principal trumpet with two major church orchestras in Fort Worth, Texas, playing many styles of music each week from Big Band to Bach as well as movie scores and commercial arrangements. He also worked as a freelance player providing chamber music with string quartets, brass quintets, and jazz combos. He has performed with the Fort Collins, Cheyenne, and Britt Festival orchestras and conducted the student ensemble at the Western State Trumpet Conference (Gunnison, CO) in 2006.
Dr. Brooks’ Bachelors degree in Composition is from the University of North Texas. He is an active composer and arranger creating music for trumpet ensemble, jazz bands and combos, church orchestras, chamber music groups and has produced several editions for solo trumpet. He has studied composition and arranging with William Latham, Paris Rutherford, and David Caffey.
His trumpet teachers include Leonard Candelaria, Keith Johnson, Kathryn James (baroque trumpet) and John Holt at the University of North Texas where he completed his Masters in Performance and took full advantage of the jazz studies program. While completing his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado, he served as director of a lab band and the jazz guitar ensemble.
He has presented papers at conferences of the College Music Society, Historic Brass Society, and the Evangelical Philosophical Society.
