What is Ohana 80631?
Ohana 80631 is a network of families in the Northern Colorado Region that are there to help students attending the University of Northern Colorado from Hawaii adjust to life in Colorado. It is a program managed by the UNC Asian/Pacific American Student Services (A/PASS) Porgram, with support from the UNC Alumni Association.
How will participating in Ohana 80631 help a student from Hawaii adjust to life in Colorado?
Ohana mentors want to welcome you to Colorado and UNC. Families often have dinner with you, take you hiking in the mountains, and take you to events in town. These mentors have lived in Colorado and can be a valuable resource when you have questions about the weather, shopping and general questions about the State. Mentors are also an additional resource for offices and programs on campus that can help you while you are a student.
How much time can I expect the volunteer families to spend with my student?
Our expectation is that our volunteer families would get together with our students at least once a month during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Beyond that, any time spent with the student is at their discretion.
Are Background Checks required for Volunteer Families?
Yes. In order to provide the safest environment for our students, we ask that all of our volunteers do a criminal history background check.
What kind of support can I expect from A/PASS and the Alumni Association?
A/PASS and the Alumni Association will sponsor 2 events per year to which all Ohana mentors and participating students will be invited.
What if my mentor and I have a difficult time connecting?
Please contact the office if you have not heard from your mentor within the first couple weeks of school. Sometimes coordinating your schedule and theirs is difficult, but connection is possible.
Who can I call if I have questions about this program?
