UNC Top Five College Searching Tips: Where to Begin Looking

5. Location, Location, Location: Staying close to home versus venturing into the unknown. Many students begin their search process casting a wide net into colleges across the country and beyond. Most students eventually choose a school that is far enough away from home to establish a sense of independence while sill maintaining a accessible home base that is open any time their looking for a home cooked meal or laundry tips! UNC is nestled in the heart of Greeley, Colorado, a city of nearly 100,000 people. Greeley is approximately 45 minutes away from Rocky Mountain National Park, an hour from some of the nation’s best skiing & snowboarding, and an hour from downtown Denver.

4. Programs: Choosing a college based on programs is an excellent place for many students to begin. Students who know their prospective majors are able to consider schools that possess strong programs in their field. Often college viewbooks and other general informational handbooks will list the top five majors of a college. While UNC offers over a hundred different degree programs in five separate colleges, it’s reputation of excellence in Education, Business, the Performing and Visual Arts, Nursing, and Athletic Training are widely recognized not only in the state of Colorado but throughout the nation.

3. Campus Size: Colleges in the United States vary from a few hundred students to nearly 50,000 students. The size of a college campus can affect everything from how many students are in a classroom and the accessibility of faculty to the diversity of student clubs and organizations and even the attendance at the weekend football game. While some students may thrive on a large campus others may seek the comfort of a small school. UNC’s total enrollment stands at 12,114. A medium sized school in the state of Colorado, UNC offers small class sizes, accessibility to full time faculty and staff, free tutoring and other student support services, and over 130 clubs and organizations.

2. Cost: Cost is one of the most key factors in a student’s final decision. Many students will apply to between three to five schools and will not make their final decision until they have received their financial aid packages in the spring. UNC is extremely affordable for both resident and non-resident students offering over 400 institutional scholarships as well as the resident, Provost Scholarship and the Non-Resident, National Undergraduate Scholarship, both automatic to students who meet the qualifications. Remember to watch out for the March 1 financial aid deadline!

And, now the number one college searching tip…

1. It’s more than a feeling…or maybe not!: The way a student feels on a college campus cannot be underestimated. While all students should consider location, programs, campus size, cost, and other factors, it is important to recognize that a college campus is not only going to be their place of study but also their home. Integrating into the campus community is a key part of every student’s success. The campus visit is the best way to explore this connection. If at all possible you and your student should try and visit schools while their in session to view the entirety of the student body and the manner in which they interact together and with faculty. UNC offers campus tours Monday through Friday five times a day and offers appointments for prospective students with faculty, admissions, and financial aid. UNC also offers campus Preview Days throughout the fall and spring semesters. Remember to contact schools early to reserve your campus tours as many tours fill up in advance.

From the Dean of Students...

Dear parent,

The faculty and staff at the University of Northern Colorado are excited that your student is giving serious consideration to attending our institution. Northern Colorado is committed to academic excellence and learning both in and out of the classroom, as evidenced by our programs and services. With learning being at the center of the University experience, we offer endless opportunities for students not only to be engaged with faculty, students and staff, but also with the Northern Colorado and Greeley communities.

Although Northern Colorado is large enough for students to have many opportunities, it is also small enough to be personable. On a typical day at UNC, you may find students engaged in conversation with faculty over coffee at the University Center or you may find students getting personalized advising from the staff at Academic Support & Advising. We believe in the personal approach that will help make this the best university experience for your student.

Going to college is a big step, both for the students and their families. The best way for you to help your student be successful is to start planning their UNC education today! We are looking forward to having your student contribute to our vibrant community!

Sincerely,

Samantha Ortiz Schriver, PhD
