Definitions
Academic Standing - Shows the academic standing of student at the end of the last term enrolled within the fiscal year. After grades were applied.
Admission Status - Shows the status of applicants. Admits are a sub-set of Applicants and Enrolled is a sub-set of Admits. Acceptance Percentage is the percent of the applicants that are admitted and Yield is the percent of admits that enrolled.
Admission Type - "Regular Admits" are students that met UNC's admission standards. "Window Admits" are students that were admitted even though they did not meet admission standards. "Exempt" students are exempt from admission standards.
Annual Salary Range - Based on alumni survey respondents that responded to the salary question that were employed full-time.
Course Level - Undergraduate Courses (Course Numbers 100-499) are grouped into Lower Division Courses (100-299) and Upper Division Courses (300-499). Graduate Courses are grouped into Grad I Division Courses (500-699) and Grad II Division Courses (700+).
Course Type - Shows courses classified into three groups: "General Education", "Arranged Courses", and all other courses into "Program Courses".
Credit Load - Credit load is based on the load during the last term enrolled within each fiscal year. Full-Time for graduate students is 9 or more hours. Full-time for all others is 12 or more hours.
Cumulative GPA - Cumulative GPA is calculated based on the GPA of each student at the end of the last term enrolled within each fiscal year. It includes the grades from that term.
Did Program Enhance Ability to Get/Keep Job? - Based on alumni survey respondents that responded to this question that were employed full-time.
Did Program Meet Educational Goal? - Based on all alumni survey respondents that responded to this question.
Employment Field - This item is self-reported based on the area from a list of choices the respondent felt represented their current position. The table only shows alumni survey respondents who responded to this question and were employed full-time.
Employment Status - This item is categorized from a combination of questions from the alumni survey. First, Students who responded that they were attending graduate school full-time were grouped as such. Otherwise, if the student responded that they were employed they were broken down into "Preferred Field" or "Outside Preferred Field". Otherwise, if the student responded that they were not employed and not attending graduate school full-time, they were considered "not employed" and were further broken down into "Seeking Employment" and "Not Seeking Employment".
Faculty Type - The type of faculty that taught the courses. Broken down into "Full-Time", "Part-Time", and "Teaching Assistants".
High School Rank - This is a standardized variable to account for the differing sizes of high school graduating classes. It ranges from 0-100 with 100 meaning graduating at the top of the class.
How Soon Were You Offered a Position? - Based on alumni survey respondents that responded to this question that were employed full-time.
Location - for the Enrollment section, location is determined by looking at all classes each student is enrolled in during the last term within the Fiscal Year. If they are enrolled in exclusively "Off-Campus State-Funded" courses, they are classified that way and likewise for exclusively "On-Campus" courses. Students who are enrolled in both "On-Campus" and "Off-Campus State-Funded" courses are classified as "Both". For the Degree Recipient, New Freshmen, New Transfers, and New Graduate sections it is determined by the external location code attached to the students' major.
Multiple Majors (Minors) - Students that have more than 1 major are accounted for by counting them once at each level for each major. For the University Profile each student is counted only once. In the college profiles, if the student has majors in different colleges they are counted in each college, but if their majors are in the same college they are counted only once in that college. In the program profiles, if the student has majors in different programs they are counted in each program, but if their majors are in the same program (i.e. different emphases) they are counted only once in that program. Thus, the sum of the program headcounts will not equal the college total, and the sum of the college headcounts will not equal the university total. This gives a more useful measure of how many students are in each program.
- Examples:
Student A has majors of Bio Science and History
Student B has majors of Bio Science and Gerontology
Student C has majors of Biomedical Biology and Organismal Biology
- Student A is counted once in the Arts & Sciences Profile and once each in the Biology profile and the History Profile.
- Student B is counted once in the A&S profile, once in the HHS profile and once each in Biology and Gerontology.
- Student C is counted once in the A&S profile and once in the Biology profile. (Using the major listed first).
- Each student is counted only once in the University Profile.
Off-Campus State-Funded Credit Hours - These credit hours are separated from the On-Campus credit hours. The distribution of these credit hours into colleges and departments is based on the prefix of the course. i.e. OCSF courses with A&S prefixes are counted in A&S, OCSF courses with EDSE Prefixes are counted in Special Education, etc.
Origin - Origin shows the entrance type of each student upon matriculation. "Freshman" means they entered as first-time freshmen. "Transfer" means they entered as a transfer student from another institution. "Challenge" means they entered via UNC's Challenge program and were fully admitted to a degree program.
Parent's Education Level - This field helps determine if students are first-generation attendees. It is based on whether or not the students' mother or father received a bachelor's degree.
Placement Profile - Placement data is based on a survey of degree recipients administered by Career Services approximately 8 months after Spring graduation. The data is self-reported from alumni collected through 2 mailings and telephone contacts. Participants include degree recipients from the previous fiscal year (Summer, Fall, Spring). *There was no alumni survey done for FY 2001/2002 graduate degree recipients.
Position "Related" to UNC Program - This item is self-reported by alumni based on the answer to the question "Is your position 'related' to your major while at UNC". The table only includes alumni survey respondents that responded to this question and were employed full-time.
Program Type - Program Type is a breakdown to identify statistics on students pursuing teacher licensure. Any student pursuing teacher licensure is classified as such. All other students are classified as "Non-Teaching".
PTEP Status - Admission Status of students that applied to the Professional Teacher Education Program.
Retention/Graduation - This section takes the first years' data and reports the status of the students after 4 years (as of the fifth years' data). Students are reported as graduated only if they graduated at the same level that they were enrolled in during the first year (i.e. an undergrad must graduate with a bachelor's to be reported as graduated). If they do not meet that criteria, I check to see if they were enrolled during the fifth year at the same level they were enrolled during the first year. If so, they are reported as Enrolled. If they do not meet either the graduation or the enrollment criteria, I check to see if they were suspended. All other students are reported as Discontinued.
Special Note for Specific Credit Hour Production Profiles - Because the credit hour production profiles are classified based on "scheduling code", some programs are combined into one profile as the data is difficult to separate at the "course prefix" level.
State of Employment - Based on alumni survey respondents that responded to the state of employment question that were employed full-time.
Student Level - Student Level is based on the last term enrolled within the Fiscal Year. It is the level the student was classified as during the term before grades were applied at the end of the term.
Student Major (Credit Hour Production Section) - Breakdown of the majors of the students enrolled in the courses. If the student does not have a major in the program then they are classified into a college according to their first major. Interdisciplinary Studies and Pre-Professional majors are grouped into the "Other Program" category.
Time Frame - the time frame used is five years of Fiscal Year data. (i.e. FY 1999/2000 is Summer 1999, Fall 1999, and Spring 2000). Headcount is calculated by using an unduplicated headcount within each fiscal year. The data used for each student is based on the last term enrolled within the fiscal year.
