Three pairs of committee members (Clinefelter/Pringle), Embry/Smith, Ludeloff/Krahnke) shared summaries of themes/goals they’d been working on.
The committee agreed to the following in drafting a document to share with campus:
• Use the Clinefelter/Pringle document as a starting point
• Present key concepts as themes rather than goals
• Include direct quotes from campus conversation transcripts that support themes
• Incorporate information from student conversations as it becomes available
Members discussed how detailed the document should be. The general consensus was that it would be difficult to get campus to agree on anything beyond goals before Dec. 15. Robbyn Wacker will clarify with President Norton that goals are sufficient for the Dec. 15 deadline.
The committee worked on editing themes, resulting in the following:
• Effect a climate change to provide for inclusive decision-making, shared governance, respect for all members of the University, and dialogue as opposed to dictates
• Invest in personnel to recruit and retain quality faculty and staff
• Provide and maintain facilities that are appropriate to carrying out and maintain our academic mission and functions
• Focus on the academic mission of a high-quality liberal arts education, specialized programs, and graduate education
• Engage in long-term financial planning to increase resources through clearly identified goals that are communicated broadly
• Represent the university’s successes to external groups to leverage support
• Engage the community
Committee members agreed to host two more rounds of campus conversations before Dec. 15—one to get input on themes and one to get input on resulting goals.
Stephanie Torrez has scheduled student conversations on November 14,16 and 20-22. Nine students are co-facilitating.
Keiko Krahnke asked permission to write about this process in a book chapter, and no one objected.
Four campus conversations will be scheduled for the week of Nov. 13 and publicized the week of Nov. 6. The committee will agree on the format of the conversations at its Nov. 10 meeting.
