Academic Planning Campus Conversations Round 2
Nov. 16, 2006
10-11 a.m., Gunter 1120
Facilitators: Joan Clinefelter, Gloria Reynolds
How do themes reflect your views?
• Recruitment/retention important (no daycare or spousal hiring at UNC; dependent tuition would help). Greeley has more going for it that lots of places; it’s about more than comparing salaries at similar institutions. Salary matters, but that’s not all.
• Academic mission is central
• “Selling” UNC to the market is important; talk about quality of UNC degree
What’s missing?
• Recruitment/retention of graduate students (daycare would help here, too)
• UNC has huge “plus” in personal connection with students (smaller class sizes)
• Publicity about UNC successes (missing link between accomplishments and those who do publicity) community-academic partnerships, publications, grants, info through deans? through fac. trustee?
Questions
• What does engage community mean?
engage the community in community-academic partnerships
Strategies
• Seek community support for athletics
• Set maximum class size for upper division classes (w/flexibility)
• Feedback from alumni; highlight their successes
• Share alumni and employer survey information centrally
