Academic Planning Campus Conversations Round 2
Nov. 13, 2006
noon-1 p.m., University Center, Aspen A
Facilitators: Marcus Embry, Robbyn Wacker
How do these reflect your views?
- We regret that we didn’t say anything about the students
- (learning, small “college” environment)
- (promote internally and externally- Academic Identity)
- How are we different?
- Bridge between academic support services and academic units/ students
- Identify niche, then decided what we can’t be. Don’t want to be.
- Add workload- could be under recruitment retention. Please keep themes listed.
How can we turn these themes into goals?
- Give priority to compensation of faculty, staff (under recruitment/ retention)
- Sep. goal for workload issues/employee engagement
- Staff workload too
- Needs flexibility in workload- more justice vs. equality
How do we get there?
- Subcommittee reports had specific goals- please use these
- Creative learning community opportunities for more UNC students
- Need goals under engage in financial planning (need targets)
- E.g. increase out of state enrollment
- Need incentives for recruiting
- Connection between revenue generation and budget
- Think creatively about how to recruit students. Money generation
- More communication about intellectual pursuits of our faculty, students (we are all learning- professional development for assessment positive to be sta full time-sends message that quality is valued here
Questions/Process
- Last theme was too vague
- What does “engage the community: mean?
- About internships, image, unifies messaging, finding financial win/wins
- Seems like last three things are the same (maybe distinction in use of funds to share msg)
- This “process” screens out innovative ideas. Communities are not good at producing great ideas.
- 1st theme: where is leadership
- Where does Lipman Hearne communication study fit in?
- We have to let academic leaders engage in academic leadership- Provost/Deans- let them lead
- Let’s be more selective about the students we accept
- Assessment should be full time position which reflects that we value quality.
