Tuesday, October 24, 2006 Facilitators: Brian Luedloff and Joan Clinefelter

Group 1 (there was only one)

Synthesize Our Strengths (core values):

  • Respect for professionalism (this is positive when it occurs and should be broadened
  • Occasional attempts to resist the community college model (="efficiency", resist administrative control of faculty [and] political control of administration

See the Future:

  • Increase # tenure track faculty (= increasing # of faculty and decrease reliance on term faculty)
  • Increase faculty salaries to aid in recruitment and retention
  • compensate all employees fairly
  • Acquire library resources (electronic and otherwise) that are essential to quality higher education
  • Respect the values of a liberal education as more than preparation for vocational training

Find Way to Get There:

Goal: Find and/or keep people who can raise public and private funds

Goal: Find and/or keep people who can manage the University's revenues and expenditure

Goal: President should work aggressively to raise both public and private funds

Goal: Encourage (through the evaluation and promotion /tenure process) without requiring faculty to pursue external funding

Goal: Cultural shift across the University to provide meaningful recognition of the hard work provided by faculty to support a quality liberal arts education in and out of the classroom
