Northern Colorado intercollegiate athletics teams moved up to NCAA Division I competition and played their inaugural season in the powerhouse Big Sky Athletic Conference in 2006.
- 34% of Northern Colorado student-athletes have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and 45% have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

- Students get free admission to campus sporting events with their student ID.
- The Bears have recorded 28 individual national champions, three national players of the year, back-to-back national football championships, 10 trips to the College World Series, more than 400 All-American athletes and nearly 50 Academic All-Americans.
- $16 million student-supported renovation of sports facilities includes the Jackson Soccer complex, a new indoor practive facility, six lighted playing fields (two are synthetic material), a renovated arena and six post-temtion concrete tennis courts.
- The Bears’ athletic teams are a point of pride on campus and in the community and the Athletic program complements institutional priorities.
