Becoming a Peer Tutor

The ASA Tutoring Center is a nationally certified program. Through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), we award beginning, advanced, and master level certification to undergraduates who meet the training requirements:

Major Responsibilities
- Participate in the Academic Support and Advising’s nationally certified tutoring program (certified through the College Reading and Learning
Association). Complete national certification requirements for basic, advanced, or master tutor certification (i.e. training and number of tutoring hours).
- Conduct individual, and / or group tutoring sessions with UNC students in relevant subject area(s).
- Participate in all training sessions, workshops, and meetings as required by the Assistant Director of Tutorial Services and/or other ASA staff members.
- Actively participate in ongoing training sessions every semester of employment.
- Maintain hours in the Tutoring Center, Satellite Learning Centers, and/or in the classroom that would be conducive to the needs and success of UNC students.
- Assume responsibilities, if needed, as a classroom tutor.
- SI leaders work 12-13 hours weekly
- Actively participate in the Tutoring Center's evaluation process, including service and individual evaluations.
- Obtain complete knowledge of, and adhere to, the information, policies, and procedures presented in the employee handbook(s).
- Maintain familiarity with the University of Northern Colorado's mission and the Academic Support and Advising’s mission.
- Maintain familiarity with ASA services and other program operations.
- Ensure that all Tutoring Center policies and procedures are followed and that paperwork is current, accurate, and complete.
- Demonstrate professionalism when representing the University of Northern Colorado and the Academic Support and Advising and when staffing the Tutoring Center.
- Perform duties as assigned by the Director for Tutorial Services.
Tutor Position Requirements
- Sophomore or higher status.
- Possess and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
- Obtain a letter of recommendation from the UNC department relevant to the area in which the applicant will be tutoring (e.g. Math = letter from a Math department professor).
- Possess a course schedule which will allow the tutor applicant to participate in ongoing training sessions during every semester they are employed.
- Successfully pass diagnostic tests, if applicable.
- Possess strong interpersonal communication skills as well as a desire to assist fellow students.
- Must be reliable, responsible and able to deliver quality service with a positive attitude.
- Must display ethical behavior and commitment to Academic Support and Advising and to the University of Northern Colorado.
- Must display openness and respect for persons from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Wages
- Starting wage is approximately $7.65 per hour (15 weeks) for undergraduates.
