Important Links

Step 1: Prepare the system before the lecture.

Use a large notebook (for ample room)
Draw a vertical line down the left side the page for the recall column
Leave two inches at the bottom of the page

Step 2: Record notes during lecture

Record notes in your customary style
Be clear and complete in notes
Capture main ideas and note detail
   Skip lines between ideas
   Use abbreviations and symbols

Step 3: Recall, recite, and review notes

Consolidate notes as soon as possible after class
Read through notes, jot down words, phrases in recall column
Cover up right side of page, and using the recall column, recite aloud the facts and ideas presented in the lecture
Uncover notes and verify what you said.
 Review the 5 R’s of note-taking

RECORD the facts and ideas in the right column
REDUCE these notes to key words and phrases after class
RECITE the main ideas by covering up your notes and using key words and phrases as a guide
REFLECT on the material by adding your own ideas, opinions, and questions at the bottom of the page.
REVIEW your notes for about 10 minutes a week to help you retain the material.

Leave space at the bottom of the page (or on a separate page) to record your reflections, opinions, and questions. If you do this, remember that these are YOUR reflections, opinions, and questions.
