Biography
Mr. Shaw is a communication historian and theorist, journalism
professor, retired U.S. Army Reserve officer, and writer who has taught
at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication since 1966. As a
scholar he is best known for his work, with Max McCombs of Texas, about
the agenda setting function of the press and for his studies of 19th and
20th century American and Southern press history. He is author or
co-author of ten books and many scholarly articles and papers. He
served in the U.S. Army Reserve, N.C. Army National Guard, or U. S. Army
for 30 years, earning several awards. As an historian, Shaw focused on
19th century American and Southern journalism, and in conceptual studies
of communication history. His poetry has been presented to North
Carolina state and local audiences. Shaw has won several awards,
including Teaching Appreciation and Outstanding Research & Teaching
awards and - in 2001 - was recipient of the David Brinkley Teaching
Award.
