UNC Veterans Assistance

In addition to the range of services provided to all students at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), the Office of Financial Aid administers educational benefit programs specifically for veterans and their dependents of disabled veterans. All veterans and their dependents of disabled veterans currently attending UNC are urged to contact our office in person, by phone or by email with any questions they may have pertaining to their education, or any of their Veterans Administration(VA) Educational Benefits. Please be advised that any assistance received from the Veterans Administration is subject to Department of Education guidelines for financial aid. Your V.A. benefits may affect other financial aid you may be receiving.

Veteran Programs for Education

Chapter 30 (Complete V.A. form 22-1990)
  • Active Duty Personnel who are attending UNC and using the "Montgomery G.I. Bill"
  • Students who were at one time on active duty and who had payroll deductions for the "Montgomery G.I. Bill"
Chapter 31
  • Disabled veterans participating in the VA Vocational Rehabilitation & Education program
    Note: For additional information regarding your participation in or eligibility for this program, please contact Jim Purcell at (307) 433-2741.
Chapter 35 (Complete V.A. form 22-5490)
  • Eligible dependents or spouses of 100% disabled or deceased veterans
Chapter 1606 (Complete V.A. form 22-1990)
  • Members of the active Reserve and/or National Guard
Chapter 1607 (REAP) - (Complete V.A. form 22-1995)
  • Reservists called to active duty in response to war or National Emergency as declared by president or congress

Military Activation

Students with questions regarding military activation and its effect on their enrollment status should contact the Dean of Students in person or by phone at (970) 351-2796.  Make sure you follow formal withdrawal procedure if you are planning to leave school.

Steps to applying for V.A. Education benefits at UNC

1. Complete V.A. application

  • Complete the application appropriate to your program. See "Veteran Programs for Education."
  • Transfer students will also complete the application to their program. See "Veteran Programs for Education."
  • Students applying for Ch. 30 or Ch. 1607 (REAP) will also need a copy of Member 4 of their DD214.

2. Complete UNC Course Selection Form

  • Click the the link to download the Course Selection Form you can also obtain a form at the Office of Financial Aid
  • This form requires your advisors signature to verify that courses listed will apply toward their major.
  • This form must be completed for every semester of enrollment.
  • Failure to complete the UNC Course Selection Form may result in the termination of benefits at any time.

3. Bring your documents to the Office of Financial Aid in Carter Hall

  • Faxes of completed documents are acceptable.
  • A file will be created for auditing purposes.
  • Please note that new applications will take the regional V.A. office in St. Louis, MO
    10 to 12 weeks for processing.
  • Renewal or transfer applications will take 8 to 10 weeks for processing.

Additional information

  • To continue V.A. benefits for ANY semester, simply complete a new course selection form.
  • If you are receiving other financial aid while attending UNC, V.A. awards will be included as part of your total award package and other aid may be adjusted.
  • Make sure you contact the V.A. Office if you drop below full time enrollment.
  • If you are transferring to or from UNC, please be aware that all schools administrate differently.  Make sure you contact your V.A. office so you understand your responsibilities for eligibility.
