Making a web Photo Gallery

Step 1: Select Photos for your Gallery

  1. Go to the 2009 Unedited Photo Gallery and check out the galleries you'll be working on.
  2. Get the Chicas2009Photos cd-rom and Copy and Paste all the photos you might want in your gallery into a new folder. You can always delete photos later, so pick any photo that you think is decent for now.
  3. Revise your photo selections. Choose a set of about 10 to 25 photos that:
    • include a mix of different people, places, and things
    • capture the major themes/events in your topic
    • avoid repetition (if two photos are similar, choose one)

Step 2: Edit the Photos

Now you'll need to edit the untouched original photos for the web.

  1. Create a new folder on the desktop to save your edited photos. Name it for the gallery you're making.
  2. From inside the folder of images in your gallery, Right Click one of the images, go to Open With > Choose Program > Microsoft Office Picture Manager. This makes Picture Manager the default program for editing the pictures.
  3. For every photo in your gallery, do the following…
  • Open the photo.
  • Click Edit Pictures… (in the top toolbar). Use the tools in the right pane to:
    • Try the Auto Correct button to improve the picture. If you don't like the result, Undo by pressing Ctrl Z (or click Edit, Undo from the menu).
    • Crop the photo to a rectangle that focuses on what you think is interesting in the photo.
    • (Optional) Adjust the Brightness and Contrast a little (especially if the photo is too dark).
  • Choose Save As... to save the photo into the folder you created for the gallery. Your filename will appear as the "title" of the photo in the web gallery, so choose a descriptive name but don't use any spaces in the filename. Close the Photo and repeat the steps above for the next photo.

Step 3: Create Captions for the Photos

  1. Download, open, and save the Captions Spreadsheet to your photo gallery folder.
  2. Fill in the spreadsheet with the information about the photos in your gallery. List the photos in the order you’d like them to appear.
  3. When you’ve inputted the information, save the spreadsheet to your gallery folder and close the spreadsheet.

Step 4: Contribute your Photo Gallery to the Group

  1. Ask someone to borrow the Flash Drive we’re using to make the photo gallery. Copy and paste the gallery folder you’ve created onto the Drive and give it to Joe.
  2. You’re Done! Now, go help people who are not finished yet.
