UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING INFORMATION
Greetings from the School of Nursing,
As new students arrive and make the first new home of their own in a cozy dorm room, we welcome you to campus and offer our support as you adjust to the semester. Did you know that the choices you make the first semester of your college career often determines the direction of the rest of your life?
Here are a few items of interest for you to consider as you start your fall courses:
- Remember to get a tutor if you see yourself struggling within a course. The Academic Support and Advising department, phone number 351-1391, can help you determine you best resources for problem-solving academic issues.
- We also recommend that whenever you are struggling with a subject within your course, that you speak to your professor. We instructors like to know the student is trying and sincere about learning, not just blowing off the course. Your professor should be willing to help you understand if you reach a difficult concept. He/she may help you or recommend a tutor or a graduate assistant to help you.
- Remember to enjoy your time here. Stress is sometimes an obstacle to learning as well as getting the grade you want. Be careful to assess your stress and make time for something to relax you (I don’t recommend getting drunk as the solution.) Learn some time management strategies. Contact your FYE instructor for help, or the Academic Support and Advising department.
- A sign on a dorm dining hall reads, “Please clean up your own dishes. Your momma didn’t come to college with you.” It is a reality that you have to take responsibilities that others may have helped you with in the past.
- Attend some student functions and meet an upper-class mentor who can advise you from a student perspective. We will be having regular group advising meetings and dorm advising for pre-nursing students to promote the mentoring of new students by more seasoned ones.
