The University of Porto is the largest university in Portugal with a student population of nearly 29,000. It was founded in the 18th century and established itself as the top research institution in Portugal. It offers 100’s of programs spread across 16 faculties.

Location


Porto is located in Northern Portugal along the Douro River near Portugal’s Atlantic coast. It is the second largest city in Portugal with estimated population of 220,000. With a history dating back to the 4th century, Porto is home to several historic buildings and sites earning its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many traditional Portuguese dishes originated from the city of Porto. It is also where Port wine was first produced. The city has a perfect Mediterranean climate and is alive with activity. Its youthful population of international students makes it an exciting destination to meet people from all over the world.

Activities


The Erasmus Student Network will help with student’s arrival in Porto. The Erasmus student network organizes cultural, social, and sporting activities. Activities include surfing and bodyboarding classes.

Courses


Students can take intensive Portuguese language and culture each semester. They may also enroll in intensive Portuguese prior to the beginning of each semester. A variety of Sports and Exercise Science courses for undergraduate students are taught in English. Additional courses can be taught in English upon request. Graduate students in Sports and Exercise Science may arrange for a combination of research and coursework to fulfill program requirements while in Portugal.

Eligibility


This program is open to all majors with no limit on the number of UNC students who can participate each semester. Students may apply for one semester or one academic year. To be eligible to apply students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have completed at least one semester of courses at UNC.

Housing and Meals


Students have three housing options:

  • University resident hall (limited availability): 135 Euro/mo
  • private apartment (most common): 150 -200 Euro/mo
  • host family (very limited option): TBD

The International Office at the University of Porto will assist students in finding housing. In general, students will buy groceries and cook for themselves. However, Porto has many restaurants, bars, cafes offering high quality inexpensive cuisine.

Application


Students must first complete the UNC application for exchange. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Students meeting the minimum requirements will be selected to participate. If selected, the student will need to complete an admissions application for the University of Porto.

Visa


Students from non-European countries need to apply a student visa. All documents required to obtain the visa can be sent to Portuguese Embassy in Los Angeles.
