The Universite de Haute Alsace at Mulhouse is one of two campuses – the other is found in Colmar. With roughly 8,000 students, 500 professors, and 450 administrative employees, the university offers classes in its many departments:  Arts, Humanities & Language, Law, Economics/Management, Human & Social Sciences, and Science, Technology & Health. 

The International Office at the university in Mulhouse gives particular attention to all incoming exchange studentshelping them to adapt quickly to their new environment. They help organize a welcome tour of the city, international dinners, airport pickup, and several other events throughout the yea. As Mulhouse is very close from the German and Swiss border, it will be easy for the students to travel there.

Location


The University is located in Mulhouse, France in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France.  Mulhouse has a picturesque town center, as well as many various museums and galleries.  Basel, Switzerland is a twenty-minute train ride away, while the Black Forest in Germany is not much further.  The seat of the European Union is only a forty-five minute train ride away, in the picturesque city of Strasbourg.  The train is easily accessible and a discount card for travel in France is offered for those 12-25 years of age.

Activities


There are several activities provided both by the international office, as well as the various departments on campus. The Club Anglais is always looking for a few Anglophones to stimulate their learning, and the international office provides several trips throughout the year for its international students. Group classes are offered at the gymnasium on campus, more details can be found on their websites.

Courses


All incoming international students are required to take a francais langue etrangere (FLE) class as well as the required 24 documented hours per semester in the foreign language lab.  Other classes are offered in foreign and regional languages (German, Alsacian, etc), the humanities, economics, law, science, technology, social sciences, and health. Students can take Literature, Civilization and Economics courses in English.

Mulhouse uses the ECTS credit system, so students should register in a minimum of 30 ECTS credit hours while abroad. This is equivalent to 15 UNC transfer hours.

Language of Instruction


All courses are taught in French.

Eligibility and Availability


To be eligible to apply students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and must have completed at least two semesters of courses at UNC, Since all instruction is in French, students need to have the equivalent of 4 semesters of college French before participating in this program. This program is open to all majors with no limit on the number of UNC students who can participate each semester. Students may apply for one semester or one academic year

Housing and Meals


The Restaurant Universitaire is open during the school year for lunch and dinner. 3 € is the price of a full meal. There is also the Cybercafé, located on the lower level of the building, where you can buy entrees à la carte. 

Students have two housing options:

  • Private accomodation: private room or shared flat (2-3 students)
    • 300-500 Euro (private room)/400-600 Euro (shared flat)
  • University Residence:
    • 300-400 Euro

Application


Students must first complete the UNC study abroad application. Applications will be evaluated and selections will be made immediately after the application deadline. If selected, the student will need to complete an additional admissions application for UHA Mulhouse


Visa


Students will need to apply for a Long Stay Student Visa if staying for longer than 90 days. Before applying for a visa students must complete an application with Campus France. Prior to completing the Campus France application, please be sure to read the application guidelines. Once the Campus France application is complete students will be given a validation number and may proced with their visa applicaton. The validation number will be used to make an appointment with the French embassy in Los Angeles. Students are required to apply for their visa in person at the consulate in Los Angeles.

French visas take a minimum to two weeks to process after the appointment in LA. No expediting is possible.

Once in country, students must register with their local OFII office. A French student visa permits travel around the Schengen area.. Students may leave and re-enter France (from outside the Schengen area) for 90 days from the date they first arrive in France. After this point, students must have the OFII vignette (sticker) in their passport or an "Attestation de dépôt de dossier OFII" (receipt of submission). Students who do not have one of these will need to apply for another visa to re-enter France.
