NSE Application Process & Timeline

About I Locations I Eligibility I Application Process & Timline I Costs I FAQs

Outgoing Students I Incoming Students

The application process for an NSE exchange is very straightforward. In order to participate in NSE, you must be:

1) recommended by UNC and
2) selected by your host campus.

While this process can be completed in a very short amount of time, we highly recommend you plan ahead. Your application, recommendations, and essays are very important parts of your application and are instrumental in securing UNC's recommendation and being placed at a host campus.

Once your NSE application has been submitted, your application will be reviewed by the NSE coordinator. If necessary, an additional interview may be scheduled. Within a week after submitting your application, you should hear from the NSE coordinator regarding UNC's recommendation status. You will then be put up for placement at the schools of your choice.

All applicants must meet both NSE and UNC's eligibility requirements. Meeting the minimum qualifications and submitting your application does not guarantee selection or placement.

Priority application deadline: FEBRUARY 15

The NSE application consists of several mandatory forms, which are all included in the NSE application packet. The application forms will be distributed and explained during your one-on-one meeting with the NSE coordinator. To make an appointment, contact nse@unco.edu.

Steps of Applying and Placement

Step 1 -- Come to an Informational Meeting to have your initial questions answered and to receive a current NSE Directory or come by the CIE office and speak with an advisor.

Step 2 – Familiarize yourself with the NSE Directory and processes which describe NSE application, placement, and exchange policies and procedures.

Step 3 -- Get an Application Packet from the CIE-Study Abroad Office in the University Center.

Step 4 -- Select 3 to 5 campuses that interest you. Research exchange options by reviewing campus catalogs. Check to see if the schools you are interested in have courses that you would want and would be able to take. You should also begin to think about whether you will want to live-on or off campus.

Step 5 – If you have lingering questions, stop by the office to meet with an advisor to help guide you through the process. Keeping an open and flexible academic plan is to your advantage while you are on exchange.

Step 6 -- Complete the NSE application packet and submit it to Jasmine West at the Center for International Education along with the $300 application fee. The applications are due by February 15.

Step 7 -- Wait for your placement. You will be informed as to when the placement information will be made available. The conference for placement is in mid-March and E-mails will be sent out upon return from the conference.

Step 8 -- You will be directed by the NSE Office/ Host institution to complete additional paperwork. This will include any financial aid information, housing, registration, etc.

Step 9 – Get excited about your semester away! The NSE Office will remain in touch to answer your questions and share your excitement.
