UNC International Student Scholarships

Please visit the UNC Office of Financial Aid Scholarship page to review the application process. The application is usually available in mid-January for the upcoming academic year.

Anna C. Petteys Scholarship

This award honors Anna C. Petteys who, after graduation from UNC in 1943 became a lecturer, politician, newspaper woman and world traveler and promoter of global Education. She was active in the United Nations and a friend of  Madame Chiang-Kai-Shek.

  • Applicant may be studying at UNC at either graduate or undergraduate level
  • Applicant must show a cumulative gpa of no less than 3.0
  • This recipient shall be selected by the International Scholarship Committee
  • The amount of the award will vary according to the endowment’s earnings

Chinese Opportunity Scholarship

This award was established to increase cultural understanding between the US and China, and to assist China in its economic development.

  • Applicant must be a citizen of the Peoples Republic of China
  • Applicant must be studying business at UNC
  • Preference will be given to female candidates
  • The amount of the award will vary according to the endowment’s current earnings
  • This award is for one year but may be renewed for an applicant maintaining a 2.0 UNC cumulative gpa and a 2.0 Business gpa.

UNC International Undergraduate and Transfer Scholarship

This award developed as part of the University's Non-resident Undergraduate and Transfer Awards, and is intended for international students new to UNC. Recipients are selected on their merit and the awards are renewable to students maintaining good academic standing. Duration of this award will be the time required for the recipient to complete his / her undergraduate studies, a maximum of eight semesters.

  • Applicant must be applying to UNC as a new undergraduate and attending Northern Colorado for the first time
  • Applicant must apply for admission to UNC and be accepted as a degree-seeking, tuition-paying student
  • Applicant must submit a TOEFL score of 520 pbt, 190 cbt, or 70, ibt or another approved assessment of English Language Proficiency
  • Applicant’s gpa must be a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, based on grades through fall semester before enrollment
  • Recipients shall be selected by the International Scholarship Committee
  • One of the three awards available yearly must go to a Taiwanese applicant if there is one
  • Not eligible: exchange students, government / employer sponsored students, students in special short-term non-degree programs, Intensive English Program (IEP) students
  • 50% of each year’s award will be applied to the recipient’s UNC bill fall semester and 50% to the spring semester bill

Taiwan Faculty Exchange Scholarship

This award was established in 1997 to assist faculty at Taiwan's Teachers' Colleges and Normal Universities in studying for the final degree in their academic field. Please contact the Center for International Education Office if you are interested in this award.

  • Applicant must be teaching faculty at one of UNC’s sister universities in Taiwan or at National Taiwan Normal University the year s/he applies
  • Applicant must study for terminal degree in his / her field or for post doctorate
  • Applicant must be nominated by letter from the president of his / her university to the Dean of the Graduate School at UNC by December 15 of the year prior to enrollment
  • Applicant must submit GRE scores from exam taken no later than November of the year prior to enrollment
  • Applicant must submit a  minimum TOEFL score of 550 pbt, 213 cbt or 80 ibt
  • Applicant must be admitted to the UNC Graduate School by April 1.
  • Award will be $13,500 each year for two years for Master’s study or three years for Doctoral study
  • 50% of each year’s award will be applied to the recipient’s UNC bill fall semester and 50% to the spring semester bill
  • $4,500 will be deposited in student's account each semester (including summer) student is enrolled for 9 or more credit hours
  • If student is enrolled for LESS THAN 9 CREDITS, amount deposited will be calculated per credit

Graduate School Diversity Scholarship

This award is intended for students from groups under-represented at UNC in disciplines and degree levels that will be identified from time to time. Factors considered are race and ethnicity, gender, disability, and national origin. Contact the UNC Graduate School for more details.
