chapter 9
september 1
a sliver of moon
above the amber sunset
above dark waves
september 2
ducks bobbing
on the brown river--
not quacking
september 3
night-ducks dive into
the lake that shimmers of
electrum
september 4
a green biplane--
acrobatic signature
in the blue sky
september 5
night wind
in forest trees--
waterfalls
september 6
only two girls,
on floaties, laughing in the
shady lake
september 7
beside the flat lake,
ants climb the picnic table,
searching
september 8
one daffodil
by the dryer-vent
did not freeze
september 9
at the cool lake,
ducks suddenly submerge,
then pop up elsewhere
september 10
a group of children,
on a field trip at the lake,
throw rocks at gulls
september 11
a beetle
beneath my sandal
crunches
september 12
weed killer--
the entire block smells of
death
september 13
early morning
rain on the skylight as
the children sleep
september 14
the sun sets--
for a moment, silence takes
over the meadow
september 15
at dusk,
the valley, almost grey--
songs of birds
september 16
by the wood pile
waits the scruffy tom--
our cat’s pal
september 17
rain pounds
our sagging tent--we laugh
and hold hands
september 18
gulls cry
on the river-island,
far from the sea
september 19
pine encircle
a nineteen-thirty five
ford
september 20
the root cellar
echoes of one hundred years of
footsteps
september 21
a blackfly
buzzes about my head--
then it’s gone
september 22
such silence,
this deep, silver-flat lake--
a trout splashes
september 23
birds
in the smell of forest
sing
september 24
in this quiet room,
i push open the window--
carpenters hammer
september 25
we lie on cool grass,
gazing at darkness between stars--
we’re small
september 26
a boy, in the
grey mist on the broken dock,
stands by his dog
september 27
on her pink tricycle,
she, smiling at pedestrians,
has no front teeth
september 28
on dying flowers,
little bees wiggle in the
snap of fall
september 29
yellow-leaved trees
glow as the sun burns
low
september 30
yellow-leaved trees
line gravel beds of the
brown river
